THE AUSTERE MEDICINE FUNCTIONAL AREA

The Austere Medical Functional Area is designed by former Special Forces Medical Personnel with a focus on Austere environments where higher tier medical support will not be readily available. Concentrating in the basics as well as high stress events, and student ingenuity. Courses are based upon DoD TCCC Committee, and NAEMT Guidelines

The BASIC Austere Medical Program

Designed to build strong foundations in Trauma Medical Care in an environment where Emergency Medical Services are not readily available (Austere Environment). This Program will lead you into becoming a great asset to the community at large, whether in providing first aid at home, immediate attention to the victims of an automobile crash or in an Active Shooter Incident.
Those that meet the requirements of this program will earn a Basic Austere Medicine Tab. 

Earning the Basic Austere Medical Tab

There are Three normal paths to earning the Basic Austere Medical Tab:

1. Satisfactorily complete this CAG course

• Introduction to Austere Medicine (AM-1) course 

 AND Complete and provide an Outside Medical Training Certification

•   Outside Medical Certification (Current), examples include:

- First Aid and CPR/AED - Red Cross or equivalent 
- Wilderness First Aid - Red Cross or equivalent 
- National Registry (certificates MUST be current)
- Military Combat Life Saver (cert must be within 24 months of the issue date)
- Any State Licensure (MUST be current)
- "Other" medical training will be considered on a case by case basis.

 –OR–
 
 2. Satisfactorily complete a Trauma Medical Course (TCCC or TECC Based) from a CAG Affiliate Trainer or Approved 3rd Party Trainer.

 AND Complete and provide an Outside Medical Training Certification

  Outside Medical Certification (Current), examples include:

- First Aid and CPR/AED - Red Cross or equivalent 
- Wilderness First Aid - Red Cross or equivalent 
- National Registry (certificates MUST be current)
- Military Combat Life Saver (cert must be within 24 months of the issue date)
- Any State Licensure (MUST be current)
- "Other" medical training will be considered on a case by case basis.

 Once Issued a Certificate of Training or Completion, you may request credit for your Training

3. Distance Learning Program Submissions.

 
This method is for individuals that have the prerequisite skills for qualification, they merely need to provide proof of those skills. This method is also recommended for members that may lack the ability to access training or trainers.

To earn the Austere Medicine Tab you have to send video proof of Proper procedures and equipment (That's TWO separate 2 minute videos, PLUS photographs AND certifications) Example videos and Standards for video submission are provided below.
 

• A MARCH Patient Assessment Video submission
  
  • Must be in sequence according to Trauma Assessment Steps
  • You MUST verbalize (Say out loud) what you are doing so we can follow along with you
  • The video in its entirety MUST be under 2 minutes, this includes your introduction stating your membership number

MARCH Patient Assessment Example

• A Trauma Treatment Video Submission
  
  • One video Submission from these topics below (Same 2-minute standard), be creative and practice, we aren't giving you the answer for this one.
  • Clearly State your Name and Member Number for the video
    
    • A CoTCCC approved tourniquet self-applied to your arm (one handed application).
    • A Homemade 3-sided AND 4-sided occlusive dressing to a chest. This looks easy, but we can tell if it doesn't seal!
    • A homemade tourniquet self-applied to your own thigh, we will assess the tourniquet you create.

• A Photo of your IFAK, must include:
  
  • Your membership number written or printed on a card, no video edits
  • Your IFAK must contain the items required to treat every category of MARCH.
  • Manufactured IFAKs are acceptable, BUT they must contain ALL items required for a full MARCH assessment.
  • Homemade supplies are entirely acceptable

THE HOMESTEADING FUNCTIONAL AREA

The Homesteading Functional Area is designed to provide the skills necessary for families and small communities to thrive and not just survive. Nutrition, Agriculture, Livestock, and low technology Living Skills are the focus. Many of these skills are taught on our Affiliate "Teaching Farms".

The BASIC Homesteading Program

Designed to build strong foundations in Self Sufficient, Sustainable long term family and group skills. This skill program is intended to build on individual Survival Skills, and improve family, team, and community agriculture and livestock programs. The skills learned in this program are continuously evolving and very diverse.
Those that meet the requirements of this program will earn a Basic Homesteading Tab. 

Earning the Basic Homesteading Tab

A PREREQUISITE to earn the Homesteading Tab is you must have previously earned the CAG Survival Tab.

There is one path to earning the Basic Homesteading Tab:

The Member must attend a course or show proficiency in at least one Subject in each of the Four(4) Homesteading Subject Categories.

That's One Course/Project in EACH of the Four(4) Homesteading Subject Categories.

• Courses must be provided by CAG, a CAG Affiliate, or an Approved Third Party (Coordinate with CAG prior).
• Proficiency may be shown either by providing Nationally Recognized Certifications or Providing Photo/Video Documentation of a Project for that Category.
• Photo Project Documentation must always have the Members Name, Project and Member Number prominently displayed on a card in the photo, no Photo edits.
• Video Documentation must always begin with the Member clearly stating their Name, Project and Member Number, no Video edits.
• Members should coordinate all projects, courses, and Certifications with CAG Management in advance to verify they meet the CAG Training Goals for that Category.

The Homesteading Categories are Arranged as follows with Suggestions/Examples for Course/Project Subjects: 

Nutrition/Food

• Food Harvesting, Preparation and Storage          (Garden/Orchard/Wild Harvesting and the Methods used to Store those foods safely)
• Canning, Fermenting and Dry Packaging Food    (Safe Pressure and Water Bath Canning for Meats, Fruits and Vegetables)
• Meat Preservation - Smokehouse, Drying and Salt Pack    (Safe Processing from raw meat to long term preserved)
• Livestock and Game Processing                         (Safe and Efficient killing, gutting, skinning, and butchering for Livestock/Game)
• Cheese/Butter Manufacture                               (Process from raw milk to fully processed product)
• Austere Nutrition and Mass Food Preparation      (Establish and Operate a mass feeding program in an Austere Environment) 

Livestock Management

• Domestic Livestock Management              (Safe and Efficient Care and Feeding and management of Domestic herd/flock animal program)
• Fishery Management                               (Safe and Efficient Care and Feeding of a Small Scale Fishery program)
• Game Management and Conservation       (Efficient management practices for maintenance of sustainable population of wild game in a geographic area)
• Hide and Fur Processing                          (Safe and Efficient Processing of Hides/Furs for personal use or profit) 

Agriculture

• Small Scale Garden Management      (Efficient, Sustainable home gardening methods for personal use or profit)
• Small Scale Orchard Management     (Efficient, Sustainable Orchard methods for personal use or profit) 

Living Skills

• Basic Sewing and Clothing Repair    (Safe and sustainable maintenance and fabrication of clothing items without access to external grid power)
• Soap/Candle Making                      (Safe and Efficient Soap or Candle manufacture at home for personal use or profit)
• Weaving                                       (Safe and efficient collection of natural materials and production of woven products for practical use)
• Wool/Fur Thread/Yarn/Cordage Manufacture  (Safe and Efficient collection, processing and spinning of Wool or Fur to produce thread, yarn or cordage)
